Tablebase Hits from 32 piece positions

I wonder if (and when) Stockfish 7 hits Syzygy tablebases in positions with full 32 pieces still onboard.

So I picked a random opening where no piece is captured till move 12 and was quite surprised that I got the first tablebase hits within 23 minutes! And I only used a rather old notebook (5 years) for this.

This was the position: r2r2k1/ppq1npbp/2ppbnp1/4p3/P2PP3/2N1BN1P/1PPQBPP1/3RR1K1 w - - 4 13

Then, after 3 hours of analysing, I even got hundreds of hits as you can see here:

I've logged the files Stockfish was hitting with Filemon as well (D:\Rybka4\ is just a directory, nevermind that). See attached.


This brought me to the subject of thinking about how it would be from the initial start position.

12 hours later, I really got an 1 single TB-Hit on KPPvKPP:

That was an interesting and unexpected discovery. I'd never thought to get tablebase hits so early on!

It could be useful to track further endgame files Stockfish hits from the initial start position and compare this to the frequency lists and which endgames are useful to download primarily - shown here for example: viewtopic.php?t=74


Any help analysing those hits with high-end systems will be greatly appreciated. Which one is next after KPPvKPP ?

Call it a Four Knights, Scotch or Modern opening line with a little Caro-Kann in the end .. whatever, the main point is: No piece gets captured and there's no clear advantage for any side.

but also some interesting KPPPvKR and KBPvKNP!

Ok, there's obviously nobody with an high-end machine willing to support this, so I've done some research myself lately..

I ran Stockfish-7 with Syzygy bases for over 180(!) hours from root position and got some reasonable results:

It was showing 354 TB-Hits in sum. I would rank the top 20 as follows:

A few more rare exotics were KRRvKRP, KNPPvKR, KRBvKRN, KRBvKBN and KBNvKBN also.

It's noteworthy that tablebases lower than 6-men were also queried! I got several hits on KRPvKP, KPPvKQ, KRvKP and even hits at 3-men KRvK and KPvK.

This is quite fascinating because remember .. I did this from the initial chess root position, that means 32 pieces on their home squares, pawns still blocking all of them except the knights!


Another interesting side affect of this experiment are the favorite opening lines, that Stockfish-7 suggest after almost 8 days:

White's move Nb1-d2 seems to be quite popular in most of them. Black always goes e5-e6 on the first two moves .. whatever that means

Of course my Laptop only hits bases that exists and I don't have all the Syzygy 6-men tables installed, only a careful selection up to 50GB in space. And it's only an AMD 2,1Ghz 64bit dual core I was using, so any help is still greatly appreciated.
