New release: Fornax

Post by AndersF »

Hi everybody!
After a long time I have finally gotten around making a new version of Fornax. I have decided to bump this one up v3.0 for simplicity (and some obscure historical reasons). As always, I would be happy if this could be tested and listed on CCRL!

Name: Fornax
Version: 3.0
Protocol: UCI
Author: Anders Fuglseth
Country: Norway
Website: desert-flashgun.com/fornax
Download: desert-flashgun.com/fornax/versions
Estimated Elo: Around 60-100 ELO stronger than previous version (1-2)

Please let me know if there are any issues. This version should be more portable than the previous one.

For this release I have rewritten much of the move generation code, from pseudo-legal to legal generation and overall improved the layout of the code. I have introduced C++ into the code, making use of templates and the std::thread library. Apart from that there are some changes to the evaluation function, but not a drastic improvement in playing strength.

Small update: I have also added an x86-64 Windows binary in the downloads with explicit POPCNT and 64 bit flags. Looks to be quite a bit faster (but probably has little effect on playing strength).

Hello, thanks for including Fornax on the CCRL rating lists!

I wanted to let you know I have released Fornax 4:
https://desert-flashgun.com/fornax/versions

I estimate it to be around 60-100 elo stronger than the previous version (CCRL elo ~2400?).

For this version I have focused on improving the current features of the engine and also removing some features that were not contributing. It also has a more advanced passed pawn evaluation.

Good news, Anders. I will strain to find a place in my testing queue for it.
