What does it mean?

Post by PAKman »

I have a new FTP server built of the holiday.
I have band to IPs for trying to come in as Admins repeatedly.
Why would the below listed IP try to bust my site? Some bored government worker i guess.
Any help would be appreciated.
My IP is 71.68.97.166 Port:21 User:chess, Password:chess
I am new at this and hope i am reasonably secure.
Thank All
Norm Pruitt/PAKman

Hi Norm.. There are lot of robots on the internet which are endlessly probing random (or not so random) machines looking for security holes they can use. I have such accesses every day on all my servers. You should not worry about them normally, as long as your software is up to date, as long as you use firewall and backup your important data, and as long as you don't keep any private data on your server machine.

Hi Norm,

I wonder what type of ftp software are you using? Depending on your OS, there are several things you can do to lock the doors. Nothing is 100%, but you can stop most unwanted hits. Most important is having firewall and anti-virus software, and not keeping sensitive info on your server.

By the way, I was in Charlotte last July, but I didn't see any hackers...could use some more chess, though, huh?

Cheers,

Chuck

Hi Chuck,
Thanks for the advice.
AntiVirus in place and working on tightening the firewall.
This is a chess ftp server only, no person information.
I have enjoyed setting it up and learning the ins and outs of FTPing,
Fun Stuff.
Many thanks to pachnes for all his help, and clocks for all his posting.
Will be offering EGTB, Opening Books, Machine Games and various tools.
I need EGTB 42, 33p, 42p to complete the set, have all 3-5 and 33 available.
Thanks Again,
Norm
