note that a full collection of torrents for Nalimov EGTBs does already exist. Kirill has also put a great webpage together to complement it with information: http://kirill-kryukov.com/chess/tablebases-online/

I am not an expert on P2P but couldn't there arise problems if the torrents don't share the same trackers, thus separate swarms emerge?

No, I am not aware of any other torrents for Nalimov EGTB. My page only covers eMule collections + links to some FTP sites.

This is a welcome initiative, but I prefer a more serious approach, like sharing a complete set.

We could really use some seeders on the mule and torrent shares. I have a decent amount of up channel and I will share them permanently if I can ever get a complete set.

Right now, I have 60 or 70 sets upwards of 50% with no apparent data available through aMule, and we have a real source problem with the 4-2 non-pawn EGTB on the piratebay torrent share, estimating a year to collect the data. Most people showing a complete set are refusing are blocking uploads, or offering 1-2k tops.

As I get complete files from the torrent I am sending them over to my aMule download directory, but we need help.

If anyone has a complete set, a couple days of seeding would really do the sharing a lot of good through any app you have configured.

I've just recently become interested in collecting the 6-man Nalimov EGTBs and decided to begin with the 3+3 pawnless. I have tried a couple of methods of acquiring them, and am still researching it...

In my experience ftp is very reliable with a good ftp client (I use WS_FTP95 LE), but unfortunately the 6-man EGTBs seem unavailable via ftp these days (after Dr Hyatt's site crashed). That would be my preferred method if it becomes available again in future.

The only http direct download source I could find is http://tablebase.sesse.net/3+3/ but unfortunately it seems unreliable. I downloaded the first dozen files and three gave checksum errors. I've tried redownloading one of those three times and it still gives a checksum error. I verified that the checksums are correct by comparing with http://kirill-kryukov.com/chess/tablebases-online/ So the http downloading error control seems not good enough to be practical for such a large scale longterm effort.

The only alternatives seem to be eMule (which I have never used) and P2P torrents. I have and am familiar with utorrent, and found hosoka's torrents at http://thepiratebay.org/search/tablebase*/0/99/300,400 I'm just beginning to download the 3+3 pawnless from there, but mostly as an experiment. I am not dedicated to it yet. I don't yet know how often I can interrupt the download for computer maintenance and still resume without losing the prior data. That's no problem with ftp, but I'm less sure about my utorrent client. Also my ISP recently imposed a monthly cap on total up/download usage so I'll have to work within that limit.

I would consider buying a drive with the EGTBs installed. At present that would have to be an external USB drive and I have several 1.5-2TB drives sitting on my shelf. If anyone in the USA would be willing to transfer a complete set of the 6-man EGTBs (or a substantial number of them) to one of my USB drives, I would pay shipping both ways, plus a reasonable fee for the service. If I can acquire them this way (or in any way), I would in turn offer to provide this service to others who want them.

Any suggestions welcome. I'm a newbie at collecting the 6-man EGTBs. I don't know if they'll ever be practical to use on my computer system, but I would like to acquire them - somewhat like people collect buttons, doorknobs, butterflies, model airplanes, etc. It's a longterm interest.

I found the source of my errors. I was using an old 2001 version of md5summer. I downloaded the 2003 version and everything is OK.

I did not hear about md5summer problems before, but I've seen here reports of problems with some windows builds of md5sum. I wonder what is the cause for these issues, considering how trivial md5 calculation is. Among those that work fine I can also recomment fsum.

I was using the older 1.1.0.19 version of md5summer which works fine with the 3-4-5 piece Nalimov EGTBs, because they're all <200MB. But it has problems with some larger files. It gave checksum errors with some of the 6-piece EGTBs that I was downloading. Another nuance is that the older version requires a space and * character between the checksums and file names. Then I updated to the latest 1.2.0.5 version which gave no errors, and can also read either format - with a space and *, or with two spaces as separators.

I believe Usenet would be a much better sharing platform.

I believe most ISPs have usage caps now. For example AT&T DSL has monthly caps of 150GB or 250GB, depending on service, and a $10/50GB charge for overage. That makes any method difficult (or expensive), but I'd like to hear more details about your usenet idea... Which usenet service(s) would you recommend that will accept such large files? What are their membership charges, usage caps, and/or overage charges? i.e. What would it cost to upload 1.2TB? What would it cost to download 1.2TB? Which usenet client do you recommend?
