But I don't understand why Wilhelm does not work on your (Vista) system: if you send me the error messages, I will translate them for you.

Won't install here for me either on Vista x64. I'm fairly certain I used to have it installed under XP x64 before just fine

I installed them in the Shredder GUI and tested them on a couple of positions both found the mate from the TB (checked the result against the online version and it was correct). The mates were not found without the 6-men so for those positions my 6men TBs are fine???

Looks like all your files are corrupted? If you suspect the md5sum program, you can try the same thing with another one: fsum. Just use with the -c option the same way like md5sum. I often use fsum, it is an excellent tool.

I need to look for an alternate md5sum.exe or find what dlls are missing as it will not run...

Will try later unfortunately I really do not have time to sort this at the moment.

Wilhelm installer seems to be broken, but I found the solution: Unpack the contents of Wilhelm.CAB manually, then run Wilhelm.exe. I just tried it under Vista 64-bit and it works fine.

I can't /don't want to believe there is a problem with the files I have downloaded, 1.2TB over a few months I am still shocked my ISP did not kill my account.

Currently running fsum (this seems to be doing something as it is taking a while (CPU and I/O) the md5sum version that I downloaded from the link you gave finished in a second or so.

Computers as so frustrating, every step requires another step first, by the time you get the 6th thing working to check the 5th you forget what the 1st and real thing you were trying to do even was.

I was doing some paid PC support the other day, putting right what a cowboy had already charged £200 for, it should have taken 30 minutes but ended up taking 3 hours + travel - I charged for 1 hour to avoid the risk of them thinking I was taking the p***, one reason I do not look for PC support work.

Hi, I did not try the file you mentioned but the md5sum test highlighted a missing file so I downloaded that and the md5sum failed on that too - there is obviously a problem with the md5sum.exe I have with my Vista 64-bit install.

Anyway it is all looking a lot better now - fsum is validating the files

Ah yes, running as administrator works for me now as well. Extra-Options works now
Likewise I have UAC turned on, although in "quiet mode" using http://www.tweak-uac.com/home/
I would never turn it off completely.

Will these tablebases be able to be used with Chess Assistant or Chessbase? I purchased the Nalimov Gold tablebases from the guys that sell CA, and as you might expect the EGTB do indeed work with CA. But what if I got a copy of this 1.2 TB monster? Is this monster in a format that could be used with commercial chess engines or chess databases linked to an engine?

Hi Mark,

these are standard format TB's so yes, working here using the Fritz 11 GUI with Rybka 3 as well as the Shredder GUI. Any GUI / Engine combination that supports 6 Men TB's should be fine .

I now have all the TB's verified so will be looking at the best way to distribute...

If someone was going to/near Brighton UK and they wanted a copy then they should drop me a PM, otherwise it is post/courier - Keeping this in the UK is relatively inexpensive:

A 1.5TB drive is approx £70-90, then to send the drive in the UK would be £5.51 (Standard Parcel + insurance) + a load of bubble wrap , so £76-£96 depending on the HD model and price at the time I purchase.

It would be good if some of the commercial sites Chessbase, ChessOK, Shredder etc offered the complete 6-men set on disc, they would be able to provide a much slicker service. I will NOT be holding stock of 1.5gb discs so only after I spot a pm and work out payment I will I order the disc adding a few days to the process, plus I will be copying as and when I have time and posting when I next go past the post office (and there is not a queue out the door its a little post office).

I have external SATA on a number of my machines - plus I have a SATA to USB adapter so no openning of cases would ever be required.

The SATA to USB adapters are very inexpensive and worth a look if anyone wants to help distribute with minimal postage costs....

Shaun, When I think of internal hard drives I think of SATA and IDE. What is the differnce? Is one type of drive more popular or "preferred"?

Internal drives not only weigh less, they solve international electrical compatibility problems.

I prefer external drives. I don't have a data port.

I live in upstate New York so postage isn't a problem within the U.S.

I mailed to Shaun on August 31st. I expect him to receive it soon.
