Snail mail EGTB trading

Post by kb2ct »

I have been trying to get a full set.

E-Mule is not an option for me.

I have a 2 TB external drive with 450 gigs of tablebases and want the rest.

Would anyone with a full set be willing to share??

I will pay all expenses plus

The whole EGTB project suffers if no one wants to share or there isn't a trading mechanism set up.

External drives larger than a terabyte have becomes reasonable in price

Six man EGTB's still fit on one drive and this is the way to go.

Anyone wishing to share will not be disappointed. I will pay all expenses and toss in some unspecified goodies

Should I get a full set, I promise that I will share in a similar fashion.

Without snail mail trading, the whole project suffers.

Hi Ken! There is a chance I will try to recollect the complete 6-men tablebase set this year. If successful, I will be happy to share with you.

Thank you Kirill,

I use them on a daily basis and using the ones online slows me to a crawl.

One of the objectives of this forum is to make the complete set of tablebases available.

This requires cooperation, but now that one terabyte hard drives cost about a hundred dollars, it is very possible.

Since my broadband was upgraded I have started downloading the 6-men in anger. 1 month ago I had 60gb's worth and that had taken me months over a few years. Now in a few weeks I have 695GB. By the end of August I should have the complete 6-men assuming my ISP does not close my account - I am way beyond their definition of reasonable usage

Once I have a verified set I will make available the 6-men tbs on disk for the cost of the disk + postage.

Watch this space

Shaun

P.S. I am UK based so this probably limits distribution to UK/Europe?

European ISP's are less restrictive than those in the United States.

I can download 12 gigs per month and upload 3 gigs.

This explains why e-mule is not an option for me.

I am more than happy to pay any costs involved and I suspect others are too.

Well so far I have not had any complaints from my ISP.

The ISP contracts in the UK(and I am sure everywhere else too) vary tremendously, some are unlimited (but with the right to decide what is reasonable) others specify a cap.

I currently have 3 ISPs , cable 10Mb/s max download speed / unlimited usage, ADSL 2Mb/s max download speed and 2GB monthly usage allowance, plus a mobile broadband package with significantly worse speed and an even smaller usage limit, however it means I can access the net from anywhere I can get a mobile signal.

Anyway back to the downloads – I now have approximately 800GB downloaded, once I have the complete set and it is validated I will look at postage options....

The files when done will be too large to fit on DVD's

You will have to buy an external hard drive over 1 terabyte and have the files mirrored.

This wasn't possible before, but it is now.

I have a 2 terabyte drive ready to mail to Shaun when he is done downloading.

Once I have them, I will be happy to do the same for anyone who asks and pays postage.

I think I have all the 6 men TB's - and should be able to start loading them up on 1.5TB drives for mailing :)

However I have very little time at the moment to search about so I am going to be lazy and ask here:

What is the easiest way to verify the 6 men TB's?

Thanks

Shaun

P.S. Once we have a few copies about we can reduce mail costs/time by avoiding international shipping, people willing to help distribute will get priority from me.

Run the md5sum against the md5 files from the EGTB sharing page.

Direct links to the md5 files:

Kirill,

sorry I know I am being lazy and could find the answer with a bit of searching.... but can you point me at a trusted exe to calculate the sum and check against the files.

I thought there was and engine Baron? that could verify the TBs? Do I have the right program was that only 5 men?

The one from GnuWin32 CoreUtils package should be fine.

Sorry, no idea. Wilhelm was able to verify the 6-men files, if I remember correctly.

Okay using md5sum looks time consuming its going to take a while to even read the instructions:

http://horizonchess.com/FAQ/Winboard/md5.html

Looks like Wilhelm is what I need (download link broken).

Does anyone have the latest version - freeeware so no legal reasons not to attach here, from Kirill's notes I need version 1.5 or newer, lets hope it runs on Vista

md5sum is the easiest possible way. Step by step:
1. Put .md5 files into the directory where you keep the tablebases.
2. Copy the md5sum.exe into the same directory (also you can put it into any directory included in %PATH%)
3. Run command: "md5sum.exe -c name-of-md5-file >result-file". For example, "md5sum.exe -c all-42.md5 >all-42.md5.result".
4. Examine the result file to see if all files are OK, or if there are any missing files or any not matching signatures.

Wilhelm does not seem to run on Vista 64-bit not really sure as all the messages were in German....

I need to look for an alternate md5sum.exe or find what dlls are missing as it will not run...

Will try later unfortunately I really do not have time to sort this at the moment.

No problem. The md5 are included in the program.

Besides, anybody really interested in EGTBs should have Wilhelm :P

I have downloaded the missing TB so now have the complete set, although md5sum shows them ALL as failed?

I installed them in the Shredder GUI and tested them on a couple of positions both found the mate from the TB (checked the result against the online version and it was correct). The mates were not found without the 6-men so for those positions my 6men TBs are fine???

Does anyone know why md5sum is giving me errors?

I have the following md5:
10556067bcedc910abacf0c379fb28de kbbkbb.nbw.emd
You should download again that very short (18 MB) egtb kbbkbb.nbw.emd and try again the md5.
I just did, and it checked fine.

But I don't understand why Wilhelm does not work on your (Vista) system: if you send me the error messages, I will translate them for you.
