Some possible Test Suite Positions from Chess Studies

Postby guyhaw » Thu Feb 28, 2008 4:58 pm

These positions are almost all culled from John Nunn's excellent book 'Endgame Challenge' (Gambit, available in all good bookshops). I expect they can all be found on Harold van der Heijden's CD of Chess Endgame Studies.

In JN's book, John selected what in his opinion were the best 250 Chess Studies. They were all subjected to rigorous analysis with DEEP FRITZ and the available Nalimov EGTs. They are therefore highly likely to be sound, allowing Black to require White to choose a string of unique moves in order to progress to goal. JN's #21 did however slip through the net but the study was subsequently repaired and is 21(c) here.

'Δ plies' is the number of plies in the mainline before the 'EGT tested' is encountered.
DTM is not as important as DTC, the minimax number of winner's moves before the EGT after the 'EGT tested' is encountered. The DTC data available from http://chess.jaet.org/endings/ was added in an edit.

I will leave it to those with the greater expertise to see how testing these are across the spectrum of chess-engines now available.

Position 11: Best move corrected to g4

Position 32: From the given solution, it looks like Black is to move, hence corrected accordingly.

Tested the above 40 positions with Movei00_8_438, Delfi 5.2, Spike 1.2, Rybka 1.0Beta, Crafty 22.0, Glaurung 1.2.1, Green Light 301.2.2 and Naum2.0 for 5s without any tablebases.

Positions with zero failures: 26, 29, 36
Positions with one failure: 10, 23, 40
