I expect nothing less than a byte-to-byte match with Nalimov's tbs. When it can produce byte-to-byte identical stats, then you can think about adding additional fancy info. Sorry, I don't agree. What matters is the logical information - the numbers. In particular, Nalimov made the formatting field ...

By the way, I just checked Hyatt's ftp server. He has 141 6-man tbs files available. Only 17 of them are for 33p. So his site doesn't have what we're after. It appears that Hyatt is out of the tablebase "business." After I collected the complete Nalimov set I sent him an email asking if he...

This reminds me of a wise - or wry - comment about how the social interaction of newsgroups operates. If you want to get the answer to a question (find missing tbs files), don't ask politely, instead post a wrong answer (generate new files) and wait for the flames to fire back with the correction (m...

The 28 missing tbs files are ready. From what I can cross-check they look okay to me. I welcome other eyes (a Job for Guy?).

Kirill -- an email with these files attached bounced back to me. Perhaps your mail server is suspicious of zipped archives?

found missing 33p tbs (tablebase stats) files

Well I didn't find them, actually, I'm generating them. Decompressing everything proved too inconvenient so instead I modified tbstat to read in either compressed or uncompressed files. I've done a few comparisons with existing tbs files and have seen no differences, so I'm convinced the basic proce...

Yes, it does slow down when it comes to the final 200 MB of rare stuff. We'll know we've achieved success when there's no appreciable difference between 42 and 42p files. Kirill -- have you updated your smilely face list recently? If you do notice a significant drop that won't be helped by more frie...

Hi Derek, Anyone care to explain why 10000 is giving me the same file as 8192? Yes, I know exactly why. datacomp only works with sizes of blocks that are a power of 2, within the range of 256 bytes to 64 kB. So when you enter 10000, the programmer had two choices: either complain and exit, or round ...

Clocks - no, I think your memory is mistaken. The files are compressed with an 8 kB block size, whereas the program default is 64 kB. There is another possible cause of discrepancy and this is more subtle: it's that the order of files given to datacomp makes a difference. If more than one file is pr...

Though I don't have hard data to back me up, I'm under the impression that DSL (what I have) is more reliable than a cable modem (what PAKman has). Plus, if an when my ISP does break a connection, my router automatically reconnects. I don't know if routers can similarily recover for a flakey cable m...

Hello EnPlaisant, A little progress on this front to report. I've generated tbs stats for one of the missing files - krrkpp - using "tbstats". The distribution looks reasonable and the max DTM of 48 matches the figure on Kirill's page. Black to move has a longest mating line of 149. The tb...

I don't think you can create an interesting starting position for 4x4 chess, same like for 3x3. Interesting means the one which allows non-trivial gameplay. You are probably right about this, as there'd be no open space between the forces when adopting an analog to the opening of traditional chess....

4x4 chess

Kirill - I spent some interesting time looking at your 3x3 chess page, a game you solved a couple years back. Do you know of any 4x4 chess games, and whether they have defined forces and starting positions? There is a gap in the otherwise informative article at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minichess, but i...

Hi Marco -

Did you ever locate these missing tbs files? They've not yet appeared on the web site. I'm certain that if you (or someone) sends them to Kirill he will gladly update.

Norm - Your news of a server upgrade is great. I'm sure Kiril must be pleased with how his little project has attracted such grassroot support. I asked my university what it would cost to host the 1.2 TB database. The answer: on top of the initial server purchase, $100 per month plus $800 per backup...

Derek - I have a feeling you've run out of hard disk space! I can't upload any more files and yet we're a few short of the full set. There are partial files starting at around krpkrp.3.nbw. Let me know when you've cleared up room and have sorted through the files. There are only about 10-20 of the 3...

terabyte drives for 2007

Hi, Though this doesn't have the capacity for "full Nalimov on a disk", http://tinyurl.com/ybwlf4, it is a step closer. Besides, 1 TB is a sexy number (even if it is base 10, not base 2). Traditionally I've advised against buying IBM/Hitachi Deskstar drives. In 2000-2003 they had truly ter...

I've taken care of the first step for you. The incoming folder now contains mirror filenames for each emd file you have in the main shared directories. How many complete Nalimov sets are there?

Greetings, This is my first posting, writing to say that earlier this week (Dec 4) I completed my egtb collection. Thank you to everyone who ever appeared in my download queue! I'm sharing all the 5-man and 6-man tablebases and hope to do so indefinitely. So, how many complete collections of Nalimov...
