Re: How to install EGTBs ?

The actual installation depends on the GUI used, which GUI do you use? See the help manual of the GUI as a first reference.

For winboard engines, you may have to edit the ini file also. Which engines do you use?

Re: Backup tablebases

The best way to back up a hard drive full of data is with another hard drive. It's really that simple. .... I was once big on backing up data to CD ROMs and have hundreds in my closet attesting to this. But the time attending to burning is high, the data verification process lengthy, and the coaste...

Given the data size - I would suggest an external HD? Shaun Thankyou Shawn, for the suggestion. I started with an 80GB external hard disk, but it is about to be full now. Backup tablebases

I am downloading the 6 men tablebase files set by set. When any set is complete, I would like to copy them to CDs and free disk space. Copying each file to a separate CD looks like waste of CD. Re: EGTB sharing - new plan

How about using the Bit Torrent protocol?

I find many large files shared on the net by this method. The load is shared by all.
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_%28protocol%29.

Re: EGTB sharing - new plan

Thankyou Kirill,

I am looking forward to faster downloads.

I started downloading the six men tablebases set by set starting last September, and so far 9 sets are complete. I am behind a firewall and consequently have a low ID problem. The average download speed is about 20kB/s :( .

Re: Endgame Metrics

Where are the terms DTZ and DTR defined? Wikipedia says: Haworth has discussed two other metrics, namely "depth to zeroing-move" (DTZ) and "depth by the rule" (DTR). These metrics correct for the fifty move rule, but few tablebases with these metrics have been released to the pub...

Re: EGTB Test suite for KRkn

I was just going through Aaron Tay's FAQ http://www.horizonchess.com/FAQ/Winboard/egtb.html after a long time and noticed the sentence: Delfi has internal bitbase tablebases (stronger side wins/draws) for almost all the 4 men tablebases except N vs P and R vs B and KRPKR. Aaron Tay's FAQ has been the basic reference for quite a few years. http://www.horizonchess.com/FAQ/Winboard/egtb.html . It appears to have been updated significantly from the last time I've seen it. Re: How to determine DTZ?

Thankyou for the explanation, Codeman, and Guyhaw (Sorry for the "k" earlier!). It seems I misunderstood the definition of DTZ. In actual play, the winning side needs to minimise DTM, subject to the constraint that DTZ<50. Am I right? Are there any such tablebases? In correspondence chess,...

How to determine DTZ?

How can one determine DTZ from the DTM (Nalimov) tablebases? In the position No 7: 8/8/8/8/3B4/1q6/3KN3/k7 b posted earlier, Guy Hawk gives DTC/DTM/DTZ as 042/053/042. According to Wilhelm, there is a capture on move 35. How is this discrepancy? PGN Output from Wilhelm: [Event "EGTB"] [Sit...

EGTB Test suite for KRkn

Used Wilhelm to generate all unique move KRkn positions with dm>=35, and 463 positions were found. Checked these positions one by one using various engines, allowing 10s on Pentium IV and finally only 12 were left. And then I tried Delfi 5.1 and it solved all of them! Re: EGTB Test Suite

Re: utility for testing tablebases integrity

Thanks, Victor for the utility.

One question: What is the basis for classification Must be, High, Medium, Low?

For example, krpkpp is considered low, but other lists show this as the sixth most frequent!
