Re: Number of book moves
4-move books are very often used on the blitz list, and you'll find examples of that on 40/15 as well.

Re: FRC/Chess960 ranking
I will use NNUE for consistency.
it is probably going to slot in just below Schooner.

Re: FRC/Chess960 ranking
Should this be used with or without NNUE for chess960 ?
Looks to me as if it is significantly weaker at chess960 than normal chess.

A new Defender definitions file has just appeared on Windows update, and after installation the false positive is gone and the AVX2 exe downloads and works

Re: FRC/Chess960 ranking
I do have a Ryzen.
So the standard popcount exe is fine, as is the BMI2 exe, Defender does not detect any threats. It is the AVX2 exe it has a problem with.

Re: FRC/Chess960 ranking
Windows 10 Version 20H2 (build 19042.662) and Defender with security intelligence version 1.327.2156.0
Might be worth creating a zip for me without the AVX2 exe to see if it is just that one that is the issue. Mind you that is the one I'd need.

Re: FRC/Chess960 ranking
I've just downloaded the latest updates and the warning is still there. Can you tell me which of the five binaries is causing the alarm and the name of the virus that Defender believes to find? Then I can open an issue at Microsoft. - Andreas Looks like it might just specifically be the AVX2 exe bu...

Same issue. It is the exes inside the zip file that are the problem. We'll just have to wait until Microsoft addresses the false positive.

Bench on 1 core. Just type bench, it will use the defaults. It is SF10 you should be using for that.

Re: CCRL 40/15 Testing Conditions (previously 40/40)
In Windows you just double-click the Stockfish 10 exe and type "bench", Adapted time control for 40/15 would be/:
T minutes for 40 moves where T = Your time / 2054 x 15 (for 40/15)

Re: NNUE controversy and some suggestions (example: Igel, Nemorino...)
This is a precarious situation and CCRL is in for criticism whatever policy it chooses to follow. That is absolutely true. We can't please everyone all of the time. It is an incredibly difficult situation, because we really don't want to be in a position of having to judge if a net is "origina...

Re: NNUE controversy and some suggestions (example: Igel, Nemorino...)
As I said, it is a minefield, and we've only taken one step into it !!
I would hope that we would not test any engine twice, once with and once without NNUE.

Nemorino got 300 ELO, and Igel 200 ELO, and they didn't program that, they plugged stockfish-derived networks (you can actually see stockfish code in their source code repositories on github and bitbucket)... Re: NNUE controversy and some suggestions (example: Igel, Nemorino...)
If the engine is not open source, we can't tell if its NNUE is original or Stockfish. And even if it is open source, only a programmer could tell if the NNUE is original. I'm not even sure a programmer could tell. PS. I think there is a debate if SF networks are original or not. Yes, a minefield ! ...

Re: NNUE controversy and some suggestions (example: Igel, Nemorino...)
Exactly. There is an easy was to check it for yourself... if the executable is about 20Mb big, it contains embedded network file... networks are relatively big... if it is 2 or 3 MB (or less) it doesn't... I don't think you should make the assumption that just because the exe is large, it uses NNUE...

Hello everyone... I'm new here, registered today, but I have been toying with chess programming for 20 years (started in 1999.) The reason for this message is a small confusion that CCRL has added to, instead of being the "good guys", and doing what I think is "the right thing"....

Yes, the source code is there so the author has been very open about his work. I'm happy for us to test it.
