Re: Snail mail EGTB trading
Hard drive manufacturers think that 1 kB is 1000 bytes, while your OS thinks it's 1024 bytes. Same for MB, GB and TB. I think it is an outcome of advertising. It is easier to sell a 2 TB drive than a 1.81 TB drive. If advertising says a product won't leak, you can be sure that when it fails, it wil...

Re: Reliable storage medium?
The answer is sharing. Most gardeners don't hesitate to give unusual plants away because it they lose the original, they can get it back from the people they gave it to. The enemy of hard drives is heat. I buy hard drives in pairs and back files up on drives not plugged in. Data is seldom lost, but ...

Re: Snail mail EGTB trading
Super, Shaun.
I was prepared either way. I bought a dataport.
Having a complete set of EGTB's ins't necessary, but it is nice.
One of my friends who sent me a drive and wants the complete set is competing for the ICCF world championship.

Re: Snail mail EGTB trading
Some USB ports are easily 10 times faster than other ports. There is no way of telling except by trial and error. If your flash drive port is fast, then use it for a hub until you find another fast port. This is the mainl weakness of USB connections.  Firewire and ESATA avoid this probl...

Re: Snail mail EGTB trading
The drive is through customs. It took 3 weeks. There is a problem with the power supply. This will happen one way or another. In my experience even USB drives are fast enough and you can always use firewire or ESATA. It also is possible to transfer them to an internal drive once you have them. :oops...

Re: Snail mail EGTB trading
Tracking says it reached an airport in New Jersey in six hours.
It has not been scanned since.
Even priority mail is a little unpredictable, but it won't be long.

Re: Snail mail EGTB trading
Internal drives not only weigh less, they solve international electrical compatibility problems. I prefer external drives. I don't have a data port. I live in upstate New York so postage isn't a problem within the U.S.  I mailed to Shaun on August 31st. I expect him to receive it soon.

Re: Snail mail EGTB trading
I would like to get a copy of the disks as well. Should I contact you by email? Mark S. The files when done will be too large to fit on DVD's You will have to buy an external hard drive over 1 terabyte and have the files mirrored. This wasn't possible before, but it is now.  I have a 2...

Re: Snail mail EGTB trading
European ISP's are less restrictive than those in the United States.
I can download 12 gigs per month and upload 3 gigs.
This explains why e-mule is not an option for me.
I am more than happy to pay any costs involved and I suspect others are too.

Re: Snail mail EGTB trading
One of the objectives of this forum is to make the complete set of tablebases available.
This requires cooperation, but now that one terabyte hard drives cost about a hundred dollars, it is very possible.

Re: Snail mail EGTB trading
The whole EGTB project suffers if no one wants to share or there isn't a trading mechanism set up. External drives larger than a terabyte have becomes reasonable in price Six man EGTB's still fit on one drive and this is the way to go. Anyone wishing to share will not be disappointed. I will pay all...

Snail mail EGTB trading
I have been trying to get a full set.
E-Mule is not an option for me.
I have a 2 TB external drive with 450 gigs of tablebases and want the rest.
Would anyone with a full set be willing to share??
I will pay all expenses plus
