Re: Generating 7 Pieces
Make my page you home page, there is a Google search making it usable. I could use the commissions to fund the 7 piece machine. Blades are over $60 grand each. I've taken a look at your website and must express disapproval at the way you are conducting yourself. To begin with, it is improper to off...

Re: FEG <-> Nalimov stats conversion cracked
Adding 51 is not really necessary, most engines can beat up on a lone king easy enough with 4 pieces to work with. Adding 43 and 52 would be good and even 44 and 53. The house of pain, with 54, would stress even the best machines on the drawing board. 55 likely exceeds the capability of a 64-bit ma...

Re: 5-1 EGTB's
Hi, Unfortunately I have had to set aside chess activities for the past month and a half. My regular job has been requiring extra time, including weekends. I'd actually been intending to post a short note of apology here, but procrastination won the day. I'm glad that you asked though. I don't mind ...

Thanks for the translation and clarification.
Endgame problems as "seductions for the computer" ... what a smile-inducing thought! Why a box of chocolate coated memory chips and 7-man endgame problems, and my computer is in love.

In case we have any bilingual friends reading, is Lutz saying that he found a Mate in 530 line by running it into the record-holding DTC mate in 517 of Bourzutschky & Konoval?

Re: EGTB Compression Goals
What goals do you think would be worthwhile regarding compression of EGTB:s? (besides reducing (local) storage requirements) Mandatory : direct indexing (block indexing), devoid of patent infringements Desirable : variable block size, better encoding speed, faster initialization when loading a tabl...

Tuhma, This is a nice find! And it might prove useful too. You're right that value is 1000 - DTM (in ply). I presume that "eps" is enpassant status. "chk" appears to indicate the direction of the check. The + and - options allow you to move forwards and backwards in the move sequ...

Re: 5-1 EGTB's
I wasn't announcing my retirement quite yet. Just expressing my desire that loading of the tables take less time, as well as much less memory for the decompression data structures. (And hinting that a unified API might prove problematic.) Speedwise, tbgen2 is a little faster than tbgen, considerably...

Re: 5-1 EGTB's
It's easy to agree that that would be desirable. But have you noticed how long it takes (Wilhelm) to load the 6-man tables -- and how much memory the indexes consume? A machine with 2GB is barely enough. What the hey? This madness has got to end!

Hello izesk! Thank you for your interest. It's an honour to have someone register with the forum just to ask me a question. I suppose the honest - if wiggly - answer is "as soon as I can." I'd like to start tackling 7-man tables by mid-summer. Figuring backwards that means finishing 5-1 by...

How about solid state disks or USB memory? Some USB memories are quite cheap like Corsair 32GB Flash Voyager is around 100 - 150 Eur + much better randon access times compared to HD. Tuhma I'd say that the best use of a solid state disk is to increase the virtual memory space of a machine. But forg...

Hello, I am used to computational projects and I think that certain TBs like krnpkrb, krrpkrr, kqppkrr and some others are worth of spending few cpu years. Re: Can Crafty analyse tablebase positions?
Crafty can make use of tablebases, including accessing them during search. Instead of using the command line, create (or edit) the crafty configuration file. It's called "crafty.rc" and goes in the same directory as the executable. An example entry is: tbpath=d:\tb\03;d:\tb\04;d:\tb\05;d:\...

Re: Backup tablebases
For example, I believe that if the Bitbase of an endgame was saved, it would help create the (say) DTM EGT more quickly than that EGT could be created from nothing. The reason is that all the draws would be known, and the number of 'dead ends', specially on backing up to stm-losses would be much re...

The best way to back up a hard drive full of data is with another hard drive. It's really that simple. In my case I have a 2 TB external drive dedicated to storing chess data. Arpad - By the way, what program did you use to generate your board diagrams? And what are those mysterious numbers at the bottom? In your examples it looks like white and black piece counts, but I've seen other diagrams with three numbers (e.g. "3 + 4 + 2") so it must be something else. j...

Re: EGTB sharing - new plan
One always has to keep all black positions as fast accessible as possible (in RAM). So if you ignore the index-optimizations you could solve engames with up to 5 black pieces (64^5 Byte=1GB Ram) You don't have to keep all of btm in memory when working on wtm. In a (pawnless) EGTB it is common pract...
