Re: MVL EGTs for Chess

My first 7-man annotation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2h_b0puS8Vk ... I think I said this before, but I envision that in future tablebase interfaces, annotations will pop up whenever a position is queried. Thanks for this analysis! Very nice! I like your idea too. It is very hard to implement b...

Re: Ippolit Endgame Tablebases

I have managed to run 'RobboExplorative'. Be sure you have the latest JRE and to copy the RobboBaseLib.dll from IvanHoe999946f\Windows\Mode_Game_Play\ in the same directory as RobboExplorer.exe. You will run the program not by clicking on RobboExplorer.exe, instead of that you need to run RobboExplo...

The webpage looks like an insane joke but the chess tablebases and bitbases presented there are serious work.

Re: Effect of symmetry on tablebase size

If the wK is on b1, c1, c2, d1, d2, or d3, then yes, you have 63 squares for the bK.
If the wK is on the long diagonal, you may choose to place the bK only above the a1-h8 diagonal, to reduce that number to 35.

Re: Effect of symmetry on tablebase size

In a pawnless tablebase the (first) White King always goes to the following squares: 8/8/8/8/3K4/2KK4/1KKK4/KKKK4 b - - 0 1 So you will have a factor of 10 for that piece instead of 64. But what if during generation the wK moves out of the triangle? Then you should rotate/flip the position in a way ...

Re: Effect of symmetry on tablebase size

If there is a pawn in a position you have only left-right symmetry. It is enough to save positions with the pawn on the left side of the board.(With more pawns you place the first pawn on the left side.) The pawnless positions have 8-fold symmetry so you always place one of the white kings on a1, b1...

Thanks! Do you have any 7-men tablebase statistics? A mutual zugzwangs list also would be very useful!

Re: Hornecker study: move 16b ... and reflection

This is a fascinating study but I wonder if Black's 16...Qxb6+ (hoping that White would get on the wrong foot with regard to the Trebuchet position) qualifies as 'best defence' as Study Protocol requires. It is the best defence! (In a game it would be a bad move but chess studies are using differen...

Re: Distance to Capture

He states that, here, “16.Qa5 again is a simple time losing move” but this is a good example of the difficulty of assessing whether moves are time-wasting or not. I have not been able to convince myself that it is. How does one explore the tree of moves systematically to prove this, especially when...

Re: 4x4 chess

"☉" - Move leads to a mutual zugzwang. Then there is a serious bug... Look at the 5 pieces maxDTM. 1.Rb3 doesn't lead to mutual zugzwang, black just captures the rook. Probably you have marked with circles the positions with different outcome if WTM and BTM. Only a small percentage of the...

What to do? a.Download the whole 100GB = 10 days b.Download only the 40GB BTM file (4 days) + generate the WTM file yourself (12 days) = 16 days (but less internet traffic than with a.) c.Download a b...

How do you compute the AverageDTM? Is it for all positions, where draw counts as 0, or only for won/lost positions? I'm curious to compute the AvgDepth in my variants. My mistake: actually it is the Average_maxDTM what I have computed here. I will change the captions. I would leave out the draws in...
