Re: Are the 6-man EGTBs available in USA via snailmail?
External drives can often be connected several ways. I prefer E-SATA for loading the drive, but you can use USB for using it. Contact me at horndog187@aol.com to exchange addresses. If you send me a drive larger than 1.5 gigs, I can fill any extra spacet with chess related software or music  :...

I can now fill a 1.5 rerabyte ESATA external drive quite quickly.
It has not been easy. The project has taken nine months.

Re: Snail mail EGTB trading
I made the mistake of buying a PCI card and eSATA bracket from Hong Kong. The upgrading of my computer will take about 2 weeks longer because of shipping time. Anyone wanting the EGTB's should send me an external hard drive with external SATA to save time. People who sent me drives should have their...

Re: Snail mail EGTB trading
What I think I will do is buy a 2 tb internal SATA drive and put it in my dataport. The external drive with the EGTB's has eSATA so it should be fast to transfer the data to the internal drive. Once the data is on an internal drive tranfering it to the external drive without eSATA should only take a...

Re: Snail mail EGTB trading
USB ports vary in speed by at least 10X based on whether they are master or slave and there is no ways of telling except by experiment.
Master to master very slow. Slave to slave very slow.
Best is master to slave
This is not a problem with eSATA

Re: Snail mail EGTB trading
Shaun,
I have at least 6 LaCie power supplies. None fit the new drive.
I arbitralily chose the smaller of the two power supplies in the box I got from you.
It works. Copying in progress. It takes several days by USB.

Re: Snail mail EGTB trading
Progress made. It fights me every step of the way.
I wish Shaun had not included the bad power supply. That caused an anxious moment.
Back up done and I am now formatting a drive to be mailed to a player in the current CC world championship.
Not much work, but very time consumming.

Re: Snail mail EGTB trading
Marathon copying. First a backup for myself. Then the copies for those who sent me hard drives. Their drives don't have ESATA.
No hardship, because I can use a backup computer, but it will definitely take time.
Thank you. This really is a large step for the chess world.

Re: Snail mail EGTB trading
I suspect the "RMA" is a returned merchandise authorization number.
I am happy to pay for express shipping to the United States. It and United Parcel are the only way to track the package.

Re: Snail mail EGTB trading
Music is the origin of the idea of trading EGTB's by snail mail. That is a lot of music
I trade music with people all over the world mostly on optical media.
I never expected such a hassle.

Re: Snail mail EGTB trading
The music is minor. I already have about six terabytes of music. Data recovery costs are on a corporate scale. At least a thousand British pounds for clean room fees. LaCie always reformats. Try reformatting yourself, then ship to LaCie. Maybe it is behaving like customs put it through a MRI scan. :...

Re: Snail mail EGTB trading
I don't think it is behaving like it is completely fried. If it were, I don't think your computer would recognize it as LaCie. The first thing I would try is unplugging it and plugging it in again. This usually resets the RAID array. It also makes a difference whether you plug in the power or the US...

Re: Snail mail EGTB trading
It recognizes the drive but can't see the data??
It should have 400 gigabytes of EGTB's and 100 gigabytes of music.
It seems the first thing to try is a data recovery program. If that fails, try and reformat the drive.

Re: Snail mail EGTB trading
Shaun apparently got the reurn authorization number from LaCie and has mailed the power supply.
I have several external hard drives from people who want the EGTB's queued up ready to transfer them and mail.
Blank space will be filled with goodies
