Re: Newbie questions

You should try Wilhelm. The program itself is not under development anymore but can answer all questions you asked for. It accesses Nalimov Endgame Tablebases. The webpage can be found on the internet archive: http://web.archive.org/web/20090223094749/http://www.geocities.com/rba_schach2000/index_en...

Re: Sergey Yankovich's tablebase files

Most people interested in this project will already hold most if not all Nalimov 6men tables. It would save the whole project a lot of precious processing time and network bandwidth if a tool was built that can convert nalimov files to this new format. A simpler solution would be to let the generat...

A Berkeley style license would definitely help the popularity of the project. Very little is known about this generator so far. It would be nice if someone verified one 6 men by comparing with the Nalimov equivalent. regarding the "Perhaps a coordinated effort could be mounted using the interne...

Re: special 7-men tablebase

I started generating 7-man tablebases for the endings rook + 2 pawns vs. 2 minor pieces some time ago, with the constraint of promotions only to queen to avoid having to generate tons of sub-games. This case here with 2 bishops is almost done. The longest DTC is 107. I should be able to post some a...

The position has still too many possibilities to be tackled with egtbs. Maybe you want to try IDEA or Montecarlo analysis.

Re: special 7-men tablebase

Problem reduction with two pawns fixed has only to do with pawns of opposite colors – which is not the case there – hasn’t it ? right, I missed that. So the only sort of reduction that can be applied is to restrict the bishops to their color-squares and the pawns to their files. Gernot, can you pos...

Re: special 7-men tablebase

There are currently no full 7men available, neither for generation nor for download.

The only thing you might want to try is the program Freezer by Eiko Bleicher. Especially if the two pawns are fixed this might do the trick.

hgm has already collected some ideas on the potential of the restricted king on his webpage. Maybe you want to take a look there: http://home.hccnet.nl/h.g.muller/EGT7/Kslice.html If I understand you correctly, you want to leave all pieces dynamic (all positions they move to reside in ram) and alter...

Re: I am John Daniel Bryant FIDE 2367

First of all, hello and welcome to the board! Your skill sounds truly impressive. One major problem of egtbs is there immense size. It takes around a terabyte even to store all the 6men egtbs. 7men will be a lot larger. A great difficulty we are facing now is that it is very hard to compress these f...

Re: Size of 7-man EGTB with pawns only? With at least one pawn?

First of all, note that for every pawnfull endgame you also need to have the files for at least one of the pawns changed to N, B, R, Q. Otherwise you are risking that the engine doesn't know how to continue after promoting. Thats also the reason why once the 7 men should be generated we have to star...

Before I start dedicating time into this specific project, I first want some open questions to be settled. - under which licence will the files be released - is the probing code available (otherwise it is not much use) - some verification would be great (some 3 to 6 men) - how dedicated is the autho...

Comparing the stats is not easy, as they may use some different form of indexing. Furthermore Nalimov uses the DTM format and I don't know about Retrochess.
