Notation
This site uses Forsyth-Edwards Notation for positions and Algebraic Chess Notation for moves. Below is a summary of symbols that I use. Most are standard, except "♢" which was co-invented with Siegfried Hornecker.
Move annotation: | |

# | – Checkmate |
!! | – The only winning (or the only non-losing) move |
! | – The fastest win (or the fastest way to goal) |
? | – Move gives away half a point |
?? | – Move gives away the whole point (losing move in a won position) |
□ | – The only possible move |
♢ | – The move wins and has equally good alternatives |
☉ | – Move leads to a reciprocal zugzwang |
Game outcome (assuming the best play from both sides): | |
∞ | – Unknown (position is not solved) |
= | – Draw |
+− | – White wins |
−+ | – Black wins |
#5 | – White mates in 5 moves |
#−5 | – Black mates in 5 moves |
X5 | – White wins, with checkmate or capture in 5 moves. |
X−5 | – Black wins, with checkmate or capture in 5 moves. |
C5 | – White wins, with checkmate, capture, or promotion in 5 moves. |
C−5 | – Black wins, with checkmate, capture, or promotion in 5 moves. |
Z5 | – White wins, with checkmate, capture, or a pawn move in 5 moves. |
Z−5 | – Black wins, with checkmate, capture, or a pawn move in 5 moves. |
